83 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca CAMERON, Nathan Robert WWII Nathan was born in Neepawa on March 8, 1921. Nathan served with both the army and the navy in World War II in Canada and the High Seas as a Private and Stoker 1st Class. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp andWar Medal 1939-1945. He joined the 12th Manitoba Dragoons (1956-1965) and was employed by the Department of National Defence Neepawa (1956-1968), and Shilo (1968-1980) He also farmed west of Neepawa on the family farm. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch 23 for 42 years from 1945 to 1987. Nathan died on December 23, 1987 at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg and was survived by his wife, Vi, and children, David, Dianne, Jo Ann, Rita and Vicki. CARMICHAEL, John Archibald “Archie” WWII Archie was born on April 13, 1916, to Donald and Edith Carmichael of Oberon, Manitoba. He received his education in Oberon and Neepawa before going to Winnipeg where he attended Normal School. After six years of teaching in various places in Manitoba, Archie joined theYMCAWar Services in 1940 to help open Air Force Training Squadrons on the prairies. In February 1941, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in Virden, Manitoba and trained as a Navigator. From there, he was sent overseas for operational flying in a Group 5 Bombing Squadron. On April 26, 1944, about fifty aircrafts were sent on a bombing attack on a ball bearing works in Germany. Their Lancaster was hit, and the crew bailed out. He spent ten nerve-wracking days before being captured and then spent the remainder of the war, approximately twelve months, as a prisoner of war in Stalag Luft III. Flying Officer John Carmichael was released in July 1945. Upon his return to Canada, his first job was for the C.B.C. Citizens Forum. He attended the University of Manitoba receiving degrees in Arts, Social Work and Education before attending McGill University where he obtained a degree in Social Work. Archie and his wife, Allison Farmer of Winnipeg, were married in September 1950. Archie passed away in Winnipeg on August 26, 2001. CARR, Delbert Carleton WWI Delbert was born on March 18, 1897, to Henry and Ellen Carr in Neepawa, Manitoba. He enlisted in the 76th Battery, Canadian Expeditionary Force and served with the Army Medical Corps Training Unit. Private Delbert Carr was discharged on December 18, 1918. He married Bessie Harper on June 8, 1920 in Neepawa. Delbert passed away on May 7, 1948 in Winnipeg, Manitoba and was buried in the Saint John’s Cathedral Cemetery in Winnipeg.
