81 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BURGESS, Frederick Samuel “Fred” WWI Frederick was born on April 27, 1898, to Joseph and Edith Burgess of Minnedosa, Manitoba. He received his education in Minnedosa. Fred enlisted in the 226th Battalion in January 1916. He was transferred to the 1st Canadian Machine Gun Battalion and went overseas in the fall of that year. He spent the years from 1917 through 1919, either at the front or in occupation of Germany. He was wounded and gassed during this time but returned home to resume work in the family business in the fall of 1919. Fred married his first wife Norine MacDonald in 1921 and she passed away in 1952. They had three sons. He was remarried to Mary McIntyre in 1954. He ran Burgess’ Meat Market and the Sunnyside Grocery for many years. He was a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch 23. Fred passed away on December 28, 1997 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Neepawa, Lot 20, Block 5, Range 23. BURROWS, Leonard Robert WWII Leonard was born in Maymont, Saskatchewan on May 14, 1912. He enlisted in the Army in Winnipeg on March 6, 1943 and served overseas in Europe with the RCAC during World War II. Trooper Leonard Burrows was discharged inWinnipeg on March 7, 1946. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the France and Germany Star. He was married to Muriel. Leonard was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Flin Flon Branch 73. He passed away on December 7, 1982. BURTON, Leonard James WWII Leonard was born on December 26, 1919, to James and Clara (Walker) Burton of Lansdowne Municipality, Manitoba. He received his education at Glenholm School. In 1941, Leonard enlisted in the Royal Canadian Artillery. He participated in D-Day on June 6, 1944 and that fall, he joined the newly formed Kangaroo Unit which played a major part in the last few months of the war. Trooper Leonard Burton received his discharge on March 1, 1946. He received the 1939-1945 Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, War Medal 1939-1945 and the Distinguished Flying Medal. After his return to Canada, he took over his father’s farm in 1948. He and his wife, Beatrice Bateman, were married on October 27, 1956. They retired to Neepawa in 1988. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch 23 for 43 years from 1950 to 1993. Leonard passed away on August 6, 1993 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Lot 7, Block 8, Range 26.
