79 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BUDD, Chester WWII Chester was born on November 26, 1914, to Thomas and Clara Budd in Kelwood, Manitoba. He was raised and educated there. In September 1939, he enlisted and spent sixteen months in Jamaica and then went on to Hong Kong. Lance Sergeant Chester Budd was wounded in the stomach and taken prisoner on December 25, 1942, eventually going to Sham Shui Po Camp. Contracting diphtheria, he was again taken to the hospital. He estimated that in the entire time as a Prisoner of War, he was in the hospital all but three months. He was freed and discharged in 1945. According to a newspaper article, he married Irene Millar from Erickson, Manitoba and according to his obituary, he married Kathleen Bailey (Kay) in 1953. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch 23 for 51 years. Chester passed away on March 11, 1997, in Winnipeg and is buried at Glen Lawn Cemetery in Winnipeg. BUDLONG, Henry David WWII Henry was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 28, 1919. He enlisted in the navy in Winnipeg on September 18, 1942 and served overseas with the RCNVR during World War II. He was discharged in Winnipeg on October 4, 1945. He had two children, Allan Fred and June Anne. Henry was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Flin Flon Branch 73. BURGESS, Frederick Joseph “Joe” WWII Joe was born in 1923 to Fred and Marie Burgess in Minnedosa, Manitoba. The family moved to Neepawa in 1929 and received their education there. After completing his first year at university, Joe enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He qualified as a navigator and was sent overseas to England with Bomber Command. After his discharge, he returned to Winnipeg where he resumed his study of medicine at university. During this time, in 1956, he married Holly Orgryzlo and practiced medicine in Brandon, Dauphin, and finally back in Winnipeg. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch 23. Joe passed away on February 10, 1993 in Winnipeg after a long illness. He is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Neepawa Lot 7, Block 11, Range 14.
