77 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BUCHANAN, Andrew Mark WWII Andrew was born on October 27, 1923, to Bert and Maude Buchanan in Birnie, Manitoba. He was educated in the area at Oak Leaf School. He joined the Army in May 1940 at the age of sixteen and trained at Fort Osborne Barracks in Winnipeg. In 1941, he took an instructor’s course and was posted to Fort William, Ontario. After a few months there, he was returned to Winnipeg and given a medical discharge. A year later, he rejoined the Army and was posted to Camp Shilo, Manitoba. He next took a chemical warfare course in Long Branch, Ontario. After two months at Debert, NS, he was sent to Aldershot, England. There he was posted to the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada. Later, he was transferred to the Regina Rifles where he joined them in France in July 1944. While there, he was wounded in the right thigh and spent six months in the 13th Canadian General Hospital.When he was released he was sent back to Canada and posted to Brandon, Manitoba with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corp. Private Andrew Buchanan received his discharge in 1945. Andrew and his wife, Grace, were married on November 28, 1946, in Arden, Manitoba. They moved to Red Deer, Alberta in 1974. Andrew passed away on February 24, 2014. BUCHANAN, Mervin Cameron “Bud” WWII Bud was born on September 4, 1922, to Nels and Mary Alice Buchanan in Plesantdale, Saskatchewan. At a young age, he and his family moved to Riding Mountain, Manitoba where he grew up. Bud joined the army in 1939 and served with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders. He lied about his age, as many had done, so he could join. He was sent overseas in 1940 and took part in the Dieppe Raid. After Dieppe, Bud left the regiment and spent two years in the Royal Army Service Corps. He served in North Africa, then in Italy where he spent two years. From there, he went to France and into Holland. Private Mervin Buchanan was discharged and returned to Canada on June 16, 1945. Bud and his wife, Evelyn Ruth Edwards, were married on March 9, 1945 in Brighton, England. They lived in St. James (Winnipeg), Manitoba. Bud passed away on October 24, 1997, in Winnipeg and is buried in Chapel Lawn Cemetery in Winnipeg. BUCHANAN, Nelson Russel “Nels” WWI &WWII Nels was born on August 4, 1890, to Andrew and Letitia Buchanan at Stony Creek, Manitoba just west of Neepawa. He received his education at Stoney Creek and Oak Leaf schools. Nels enlisted in the army in World War I on November 22, 1915 and served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers and the 226th Battalion. Private Nelson Buchanan was sent overseas to Europe and fought in the battles of Vimy, Ypres and Somme. He received his discharge from the 78th Canadian Infantry Battalion on June 12, 1919. Nels also served in World War II in the Home Guard at Red Rock and Nanaimo, British Columbia. He and his wife, Mary Alice Buchanan were married on November 28, 1910 in Rosedale Municipality. Nels passed away on December 7, 1969 in Winnipeg and is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Neepawa, Lot 9, Block 3, Range 7.
