75 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BROWN, Donald Alexander “Don” WWII Don was born on April 13, 1919, to John and Margaret Brown in the R.M. of Saskatchewan, Manitoba. He enlisted with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in Winnipeg on May 26, 1941. After receiving his training there, he was sent overseas. Don participated in the D-Day landing and served in France, Holland, and Belgium (Liberator of the Netherlands). He was discharged on March 4, 1946. Don received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and War Medal 1939-1945. After returning to Canada, he worked for the Engineers at Camp Shilo, Manitoba. He worked there from 1950 to 1981, when he retired. He and his wife, Dorothy Montgomery, were married in 1964 and they lived in Neepawa, Manitoba. Don passed away on June 8, 1999, in Neepawa and is buried there in Riverside Cemetery. BROWN, Sidney “Sid” WWII Sid was born about 1917, to Francis and Martha Brown in Leicestershire, England. The family came to Canada in 1927 and settled in the Douglas, Manitoba area. It was there that he received his education. In 1939, Sid moved to the Mentmore area to farm. He enlisted in the 3rd Division of the Royal Canadian Artillery in January 1941. There, he performed the duties of a signaler, as the 1st Class Private.While overseas, Sid met and married Lillian Gilham in Harrietsham, Kent in April 1944. He received his discharge in January 1945 and Lil followed him to Canada in 1946 as a war bride. They lived and farmed in the Mentmore area until 1976 when they moved to Neepawa. Sid continued farming from town. He was member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch 23 for 32 years, serving as President in 1978-1979. Sid passed away in July 1979 and is buried in the Riverside Cemetery, Lot 9, Block 4, Range 23. BRYDGES, Reg Alexander WWI Reg was born in Portage la Prairie on July 27, 1892. He enlisted in the Army in Regina in March 1915 and served with the 46 Battalion then to 10 CMRS in England, France and Belgium during World War I. He was discharged in Winnipeg in July 1919. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch 23 for seven years. Reg passed away on September 4, 1961.
