37 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca ANDERSON, Fred E. WWII Fred was born in Castle Dawson, Ireland, near Belfast, on September 3, 1913. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in Winnipeg on October 10, 1940 and served in Canada during World War II. F/Sgt Fred Anderson was discharged on September 31, 1945. He received Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch 23 from 1963 to 1971 and was the Branch president in 1948-49. Fred passed away on January 26, 1989. ANDERSON, Germund Alfred WWII Germund was born on March 23, 1924, in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Nils and Hilma Anderson. When he was two years old, he and his parents and twin sister Gertrude moved to McCreary, Manitoba. His younger sister, born in 1927, was killed accidentally in a blinding snowstorm north of Neepawa in 1974. Germund enlisted into the Army in Winnipeg, Manitoba on December 3, 1943. He was sent overseas to England in early 1944 and there he received infantry training. He then transferred over to the Lake Superior Regiment, 4th Division, serving in the battles in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Germund was serving in Wasin Oldenburg, Germany when the war ended. He received an honourable discharge on June 8, 1946. He received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945 for his service to the country. After the war, Germund worked as a carpenter by trade and later became a general contractor in McCreary and Neepawa. He married Shirley Manhard on October 15, 1962 and they had two boys, Jeffrey and Bruce. Both boys were very active in the Neepawa Air Cadet Squadron. In 1972, the family moved to Neepawa where Shirley was employed as an Operating Room Supervisor at the local hospital. He retired in October 1989. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch 23 for sixty years from 1954 to 2014. Germund passed away in 2014.
