271 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca WILSON, Arthur “Art” WWII Art came to Erickson, Manitoba, at the age of fifteen, from the dustbowl area of Saskatchewan near Frobisher. Later, he was employed by Roy Londry in the Rapid City area, and in due course, farmed on his own. He married Ida Londry in October 1938. In 1941, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force as an Air Frame Mechanic and took a course at St. Thomas Technical School. He remustered to aircrew about 1943, trained and graduated as a Pilot. He was stationed in the Toronto area and was on submarine patrol in the Gulf of St. Lawrence region. When he was posted overseas to the United Kingdom, Art flew Lancaster Bombers on many raids over Germany, and fortunately returned after each raid. He was attached to #6 Bomber Command in North Yorkshire, east of Leeds. After the end of the war, Art returned to Canada in 1946, and was discharged from the Air Force. He spoke little of his military experiences. Art farmed and kept up flying his own aircraft. He flew with Bob McNabb in the north country. Following his retirement, he became involved in driving the handi-van and other aspects of community work. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Basswood Branch, which he was influential in getting started, and transferred to Minnedosa Branch when Basswood folded. He was also a member of Rotary, enjoyed golfing, curling, and gun clubs. He was President of Basswood Legion and Rotary Club for several years. Art was the recipient of the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow award presented to him by Rotary International. Failing health forced him to give up flying (his first love), and he stayed active in sports and enjoyed travelling. Art passed away in Minnedosa on December 9, 1993, at the age of 73. His funeral was followed by internment at Sidney Cemetery. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, Defence Medal and War Medal 1939-1945.
