243 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca REILLY, Alvin Edwin WWII Alvin was born on November 28, 1909, to Oscar and Margaret (Taylor) Reilly in Arden, Manitoba. He attended school in the Salisbury District, near the village of Arden and spent his entire life there. He joined the Army on May 3, 1940 with his brother, Wilfred, when World War II broke out. He enlisted and served with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, Anti-tank platoon from 1939 to 1945. He fought in the Mediterranean, Italy, France, Germany and was torpedoed enroute to the invasion of Italy. Sergeant Alvin Reilly was discharged on November 22, 1945 and received six medals during his service. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Arden Branch 144. Alvin passed away on June 21, 1976 and was buried in the Arden Cemetery. REILLY, Wilfred WWII Wilfred was born on December 2, 1904, to Oscar and Margaret (Taylor) Reilly from Salisbury District near Arden, Manitoba. He attended school until grade eleven in Arden and married Hazel Fyfe in 1930. He then farmed until he joined the army in 1940. Wilfred enlisted in the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry on May 3, 1940. He completed partial training and proceeded overseas on July 16, 1940 where he joined the PPCLI unit on December 21 of that year. He then embarked from the United Kingdom into Europe. Private Wilfred Reilly distinguished himself at Leonforte by wiggling forward in a big house on the outskirts of the town and climbed to the second storey. While he was there, Germans entered downstairs but finally left without discovering him and as they moved under a window he grenade the bunch of them. He sniped from the house for a while then Canadian anti-tank gunners, not knowing he was there and thinking it enemy-held, blasted the house. Wilfred made his way back to his own lines. He was wounded on February 19, 1944 and as a result, he received his discharge in July of that year. Private Wilfred Reilly received his Military Medal for gallant and distinguished services in Sicily from General Montgomery in September 1943. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch 23. Wilfred passed away on August 12, 1994 in Winnipeg, Manitoba and was buried at the Arden Cemetery.
