231 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca PARK, William Jr. “Bill” WWII Bill was born in McDuff of Banffshire, Scotland on January 22, 1908, the eldest child of William Sr. and Agnes. He came to Canada in May 1921 to the Elphinstone area with his parents and other brothers and sisters. He was thirteen years old but did not return to school. He became a farm hand later becoming a farmer himself. He married Violet Brooks in December 1931 and they had two children in 1934 and 1937, Jaqueline and Marcia. Bill enlisted in the Army in September 1940 with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada. Later serving with the Winnipeg Rifles. He served overseas until November 1945 and served in the United Kingdom and in Continental Europe. He was wounded but there are no details available on this. He served the last three years as a cook for the soldiers having to deliver food to them. Bill was discharged on January 17, 1946 and went back to farming until his retirement in 1965. He received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp for his services. Bill was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Shoal Lake Branch from 1968 until his passing in February 1980. PARKER, David Ivan WWII David was the first born, 1921 Feb 20, of Walter and Sophia (nee Beamish) Parker. From that marriage David had 3 sisters, Violet, Vera, and Doreen, and one brother, Ritchard.Walter’s first wife died 1918. From both marriages, there were 7 brothers and 4 sisters. 6 Brothers served in WWII. Brother George, born 1914, died young. All 6 brothers who served in WWII are in this Volume 15. All returned home safely from combat. David grew up in Rivers, MB before volunteering for Canadian Army, WWII, then serving in the European theatre. He earned 1939-45 Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and clasp, and War Medal 1939-45. He earned Africa, and/or Italy, and/or France and Germany Star(s), but we don’t know which exact theatre(s). David was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 75, Rivers, MB. PARKER, Douglas Currie (Doug) WWII Doug, son of Walter and Ida (Palmer) Parker, was born on October 1, 1918, in Hamiota, MB. After school in Hamiota and nearby Rivers, Doug married Elsie McNaughton from Hamiota 1941. Son John, (Jack) was born in 1942, daughter Cheryl 1947. Doug, the fourth son of six Parker brothers all this Volume 15, served WWII and returned safely from combat. Doug enlisted Royal Canadian Navy serving 1939 till 1945, Atlantic and North Sea, aboard St. Laurent (Sally Anne) and Restigouche (Rusty Guts) class destroyers, primarily convoy escort duties including ship artillery gunner, during Battle of Atlantic. Coldest swim was North Sea following being torpedoed. Doug earned Canadian Volunteer Service and Defence, medals, Atlantic, and War 1939-1945 (recognized by clasp) stars. Doug trained as a meat cutter and operated Kenton, (MB) Locker plant as his career. Doug and Elsie were dedicated to local communities, serving many capacities including church, choirs, and Legion. Doug was a very good athlete in several sports especially baseball, hockey, and curling, while playing, coaching, and officiating. Doug served 63 years with Royal Canadian Legion Branch #118, Woodworth, Kenton, MB, including executive as President. Doug passed away in 2010, predeceased by Elsie 1998. They rest in Hamiota, MB Cemetery.
