209 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca McMILLAN, George A. WWII George was born in Gainsborough, Saskatchewan in 1913. He joined the Army in 1943, at the age of thirty. He trained in Winnipeg, then at Camp Borden as a tank driver. In 1945, he was discharged in Winnipeg. He then went harvesting. George married Bernice Lochhead on July 5, 1949, and they had five children. Prior to 1951, he worked as a carpenter at Chater, Manitoba, until they moved to Basswood. He worked for Johnny Johnson and Steve Skatch. In 1979, George retired, he and Bernice moved to the Legion Gardens in Minnedosa in 1986. He was a member of the Basswood Legion and transferred his membership to the Minnedosa Branch 138 where he became a life member. George passed away on August 10, 1995, and is interred at Gainsborough, Saskatchewan cemetery. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. McRAE, George John WWII George was born in Lawson, Saskatchewan on August 7, 1916. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in Flin Flon on April 10, 1941 and served in the United Kingdom during World War II. Flying Officer George McRae was discharged in Winnipeg on September 24, 1945. He received the 1939-1945 Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He was married to Mary Evelyn. John has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Flin Flon Branch 73. McTAVISH, Albert Ronald WWII Ronald, born in 1917, enlisted on December 8, 1942, at Ft. Osborne Barracks in Winnipeg. He was 25 years old, working on the home farm in the Basswood area. He went to Ft. Garry for basic training but came down with measles before he finished, so he had to do basic all over again. Ronald was posted to Camp Shilo in April 1943 for advanced training – rifle and Bren gun and miles of marching. When the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry finished the advanced training, he was dropped from “A” category to “C”, relative to his health on account of stomach ulcers, and had to drop out of the overseas draft. He remained at Shilo for a short period of time and was discharged in September 1944 at Ft. Osborne Barracks. His rank was Private. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945. Ronald returned to the farm (Percy Adam’s farm), in 1945. He farmed with his brother, Alec, until 1951 when he married Jean Walker of Basswood, a permit teacher. They farmed until 1978, retired, and moved to Minnedosa. They raised six children. Albert was a life member of The Royal Canadian Legion Minnedosa Branch 138.
