He enlisted in the Air Force in Winnipeg in January 1941 and served with 410 Squadron in England and France during World War II. L.A.C. Jack McLean was discharged in Winnipeg in May 1945. He and his wife May Ross McLean had three children, John (Ian), Linda-Ann and Heather Ann May. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Flin Flon Branch 73. Jack passed away on January 8, 1996. McLEOD, Ellis George WWII Ellis was born in Shoal Lake, Manitoba in 1924, one of eight children born to Bert and Mabel McLeod who were farmers in the Shoal Lake municipality. Ellis joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and trained in Saskatoon, SK and Virden and Dauphin, Manitoba. He was shipped overseas in 1942 flying out of Syerston RAF Station. He was killed in action on July 28, 1943, at the age of nineteen, during operations against Hamburg, Germany with RAF Squadron 106 Lancaster Aircraft. Flight Sergeant Pilot McLeod has no known grave and is inscribed on the Runnymede War Memorial and the Shoal Lake cenotaph. McLEOD, Lawrence Leslie “Shorty” WWII Shorty joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on November 23, 1943, in Winnipeg, at the age of seventeen. He was posted to Manning Depot in Toronto and took basic air crew training. He was discharged on December 2, 1944, in Winnipeg after which he returned to the C.P.R. in Minnedosa for a short time. He then joined the Infantry Corps of the Army on April 16, 1945. Shorty took Army training at Camp Borden, Ontario – Vickers machine guns. He then volunteered for the Japanese War and was to train at Breckenridge, Kentucky. However, he was discharged on September 19, 1945, because he had a job with C.P.R. waiting for him. He received the War Medal 1939-1945. In November 1950, Shorty married Gloria Arthurs, R.N., from Sifton, Manitoba. They had three daughters. He worked for C.P.R. as a trainman for forty years, retiring in 1983. He was very active in The Royal Canadian Legion and enjoyed Access TV, Elks Lodge, Farmers Curling Club, and Seniors Golf Club. Shorty was a life member of The Royal Canadian Legion Minnedosa Branch 138.
