201 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca McKAY, Henry WWII The Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, SVDN, formerly called the Oak River Reserve, is located on the banks of the Assiniboine River in Southwestern Manitoba. The Oak River Reserve was created by an Order in Council of the Government of Canada in 1876. Sioux Valley Dakota Nation is the largest Dakota Nation in Canada with a membership of approximately 2500. SVDN is not a signatory to a Treaty. SVDN lies between Griswold and Kenton, MB. MBNWON. Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 118, Woodworth, Kenton, is embracing Sioux Valley with veterans from Sioux Valley becoming members of our branch. Every year on the 8th of November, Sioux Valley celebrates an Indigenous Nations Veterans Memorial Day, with a flag ceremony. Union Jacks, Canadian, USA, and POW flags are raised by family members and veterans. This ceremony goes back to Queen Victoria and is in honour of Queen Victoria’s recognizing the contribution of Native Veterans to the defence of British and Allied interests worldwide. Sioux Valley has, displayed on the side of a Veterans Memorial Hall, over 60 veterans. One veteran, Conrad White is in MSRB volume 12. Two more are in this year, Volume 15. Stanley and Henry McKay were brothers who served in the Canadian Army WWII. Stanley has sons and daughter who reside at Sioux Valley. More detail is not available at time of this publication. McKAY, John William WWII John was born in Winnipeg on October 12, 1908. He enlisted in the RCEME in Winnipeg on July 25, 1942 and served in Canada and in the United Kingdom during World War II. Corporal John McKay was discharged in Winnipeg on October 17, 1945. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He and his wife, Jean M., had two sons, Ian and David. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Flin Flon Branch 73. John passed away on May 21, 1983.
