John died when Allan was four years old, and the family moved to Minnedosa. Allan enlisted with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in December 1942. He was married at the time to Marion M. Cameron. He trained for several months in Winnipeg, then was moved to Shilo. On July 1, 1943, he was transferred to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and trained for three weeks in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, and three weeks in Nova Scotia, then on to England. He went with his unit to Cappellen, Belgium. Allan was hospitalized for a time in October 1944 with an injury to his left hand. His wife received a letter from him before she got the telegram. He hadn’t wanted her to worry. Shortly after he returned to active service, Allan was killed by shell fire later that same month. Their daughter, Hughene Alison Lefurgey, was born on December 3, 1943, and was only ten months old when her father died. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, Defence Medal, France and Germany Star, 1939-1945 Star, and War Medal 1939-1945. LEWIS, Richard Herbert “Dick” WWII Richard was born in 1924 and raised on the family farm in the Roseneath Community and attended Roseneath School. He was active in hockey and baseball and was a member of the Young People’s Club and St. Saviour’s Church. He worked on the family farm prior to joining the Royal Canadian Air Force on December 4, 1941. Richard took his training in Brandon, Hagersville, Toronto, and Macdonald, where he graduated as Sergeant Air Gunner. He was awarded his A/G Wings. On August 9, 1942, he was posted overseas. Dick was a crew member of Wellington Aircraft #BK268, #427 Squadron, which crashed at Woolfax Lodge, England on February 27, 1943. The Commonwealth Air Training Plan “Book of Remembrance” records these words on page 424: “Lewis, Richard Herbert. F.S. (A/G) R140521. From Minnedosa, Manitoba. Killed in action February 27, 1943, age 27. #427 Lions Squadron (Ferte Manus Certas) Wellington aircraft crashed. Please see Campbell, K. L. for casualty list and flight detail. Flight Sergeant Air Gunner Lewis is buried in the St. John the Baptist Churchyard, North Luffenham, Rutland, England.” On page 102: “Campbell, Keith Lauchlan FS (N) R127938. From Toronto, Ontario. Killed in action February 27, 1943, age 19. #427 Lion Squadron (Ferte Manus Certas) F.S.s Campbell, R.H. Lewis, Sgts A. Marlow (RAF), J.E. Partos (RAF) and G.R. Taylor (RAF) were all killed when the Wellington aircraft BK 268 crashed at the aerodrome at Woolfax Lodge, England. Flight Sergeant Navigator Campbell is buried in the St. John the Baptist Churchyard, North Luffenham, Rutland, England.” He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945.
