169 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca KENNEDY, Albert Kyle “Bert” WWI &WWII Bert was born on June 18, 1891, in Virden, Manitoba. His family had moved to the area from Sterling, Ontario but after his birth moved to Illinois before returning to Pipestone, Manitoba to settle. Bert was one of four Kennedy brothers from Pipestone to serve in World War I. Bert enlisted in January 1917 and was assigned to the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps Regimental Depot, Canadian Forestry Corps. This unit stood up to address the need to source and produce timber from the United Kingdom and France for buildings, railroads, trenches, airfields, and more. He was discharged in 1919 but he lost two brothers in the Great War. Following the war, he returned to work as a mechanic moving to Vancouver prior to World War II. He re-enlisted in September 1940 and served as a navigator at the rank of sergeant at Camp Vernon until January 1944. His two sons also served in World War II, Glenn in the Royal Canadian Navy and Jack in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. Bert passed away in 1967. KENNEDY, Archie Edward WWI &WWII Archie and his identical twin brother Scott were born on September 7, 1895, in Adeline, Illinois. His family moved to Pipestone in the early 1900s. After high school, the twins tossed a coin to see who would work and pay the cost of the other’s education. Archie attended University of Manitoba Medical School and in his fourth year (1917) his entire class was drafted into the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. He was stationed in France where he performed the duties of a fully qualified medical doctor. He returned to Canada in 1919. After completion of medical school, he married and set up practice in Stettler, Alberta.With the onset of World War II, he reenlisted and was stationed in Curry Barracks in Calgary as chief medical officer. His health began to fail and in June 1944, Lieutenant Colonel Kennedy was discharged. He passed away in 1946. Archie had three brothers with the Canadian Expeditionary Forces, Albert who served in both World War I and World War II, George was killed on the Somme in 1916, and his twin brother Scott who was killed at Passchendaele in November 1917. KENNEDY, George WWI George was born in Sterling, Ontario in 1888 and was one of the four Kennedy brothers from Pipestone, Manitoba to serve in World War I. George enlisted on April 14, 1915 with the 46th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Forces. George was killed during the Somme offensive on September 3, 1916 while serving with the 3rd Battalion only two months after arriving in France. He is buried in Courcelette British Cemetery in France.
