KALINOWSKI, Stanley WWII Stanley was born in Melanov, Poland on March 17, 1912, to Jozef and Franciszka. As a child, he attended school and took music lessons in Poland. Music was to remain important to him for the rest of his life. In his youth, Stanley was conscripted into the Carpathian Infantry Division of the Polish Army and taken prisoner by the invading Soviets (Russians) in 1939. As a Prisoner of War, he was forced to labour in Siberia until 1941, when the British negotiated for his release. After being nursed back to health in the far warmer climate of the Middle East, he rejoined the allied effort among British forces at the Italian front line. He remained stationed at the Italian front line until peace was declared in 1945. Stanley began the next chapter of his life in Riding Mountain in 1946. He soon began farming and remained there for the rest of his life. In his life, he returned to Poland twice. Stanley was devoted to his sister Maria, who saved his life while he was a prisoner in Siberia. There, while he was near starvation, Maria saved him by sending him food packages. Never forgetting her kindness, Stanley helped to support Maria and her three children for the rest of his life. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch 23. Stanley passed away on February 12, 2002.
