163 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca JACKSON, Alvin Roy WWII Alvin was born on April 22, 1924, to Roy and Louisa (Clark) Jackson in Norgate, Manitoba. He worked as a mechanic and helped his father on the farm until joining the Royal Canadian Air Force in May 1940. He trained in MacDonald, Manitoba and Trenton, Ontario and was posted overseas in December 1943. During a raid over their target at Russelheim, Germany, their Lancaster aircraft was in a mid-air collision with another Lancaster just as the pilot was about to begin the bombing run. The pilot F/O H. Witwer was thrown clear, descended by parachute and taken prisoner of war. The remaining crew was all killed. Pilot Officer Alvin Jackson died on August 26, 1944, at the age of twenty and was buried in the Durnbach War Cemetery (Grave 5.H.6) 48 kilometers south of Munich, Germany. Jackson Peninsula (64 0/9) on Gayoway Lake was named after him in 1995. JACKSON, Onni Armas WWII Onni was born on September 28, 1914, to John and Alina (Kujanpaa) Jackson in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He went to work at the Canadian Car and Foundry and later married his wife, Mary Zatti, in 1941. Leading Aircraftman Onni Jackson enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 in Winnipeg and worked as an air frame mechanic. He was posted to Brandon, St. Thomas, Ontario and finally back to Brandon where he received his discharge. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. After his discharge, he came to Neepawa to work for War Assets and the family made Neepawa their permanent home. He eventually went to work for Neepawa Post Office where he remained for 27 years. Onni was a lifetime member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch 23, serving in various executive positions over the years. In 1966, he received the Jubilee Medal. He was also a member of the Brandon #12 Club for many years. Onni passed away on January 25, 1987 at East View Lodge in Neepawa and was buried there at Riverside Cemetery. JACKSON, Woodrow H. WWII Woodrow was born in Wawanesa, Manitoba. He enlisted in the Army at CFB Shilo and served with the South Saskatchewan Regiment during World War II. He landed in Normandy on D-Day +1. Sargent Woodrow Jackson fought through France and was wounded by shrapnel in Holland.
