147 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca HICKS, Charles Leroy “Roy” WWI Roy was born on November 19, 1894, in Lauder, Manitoba. On May 16, 1918, he left the farm and enlisted with the First Depot Battalion Manitoba Regiment of the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in Brandon, Manitoba. He arrived in England on August 5, 1918 and served with the 18th Reserve Battalion in Seaford, England during World War I. Roy left England on June 14, 1919 and was discharged in Brandon on June 24 to return home to farm. Roy passed away on February 28, 1986 and is buried in Lauder Cemetery. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Hartney Branch 26. HILL, William Leslie “Les” WWII William Leslie Hill was born on October 2, 1920, in Lenore, MB, the second of two sons William (Bill) and Margaret (Maggie) (Alexander) Hill. Les was educated at Lenore School and enlisted in the RCAF in January 1941. He attained the rank of Flight Sergeant and became a pilot and flight instructor bombers in Dafoe, Saskatchewan. On a training mission, Les and several students were killed on November 26, 1943. Les was buried with Military Honours at Breadalbane Cemetery near Lenore. Les earned Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and War Medal 1939-1945. In 1996, Hill Creek in northern Manitoba was named after F/S W. Leslie Hill. On July 9, 1999, Vic Rushton visited Allan (cousin) and Brenda Hill on their farm near Lenore. He had been a friend of Les’ in RCAF. He came to repay $2 Poker debt owed Les, in WWII era currency. The $2 was passed to Les’ brother Nelson (Nels). We still enjoy presence of Les’ extended family including cousin Allan (Al) of Virden, MB. HINDSON, Joseph WWI Joseph was born in England in 1894 and came to Gladstone, Manitoba in 1909. He joined the Canadian Army and served as a Private with the 44th and 61st Battalions in France during World War I. He was taken prisoner and spent almost 2 years as a POW. After the war, he farmed until failing health, partly due to wounds he sustained during the war, forced him to retire early. Joseph passed away in 1965 and is buried in Gladstone.
