He enlisted in the Army on April 29, 1940 and served with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry before he transferred to the Canadian Provost Corps. L/Cpl Frederick Hares served in the United Kingdom and in northwest Europe during World War II until his discharge on February 7, 1946. He was married to Edith Beach. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch 23 for 27 years from 1946 to 1973. Frederick passed away on October 19, 1973. HART, Alvin Jack William WWII Alvin was born in Brookdale, Manitoba on September 9, 1916. He enlisted in the Army in Winnipeg on March 16, 1942 and served with the Fort Garry Horse in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during World War II. Trooper Alvin Harts was discharged on February 13, 1946 in Winnipeg and came to Manitoba on July 2, 1946. He was married to Jose Crippa, a war bride from Sussex. Alvin received the 1939-1945 Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and France and Germany Star. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch 23 for 63 years. Alvin passed away on March 20, 2007. HART, Gerald Charles WWII Gerald was born on January 29, 1917, in Neepawa, Manitoba and briefly took over his father’s shoe repair business following his father’s death in 1934. The same year, Gerald enlisted and received his training in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Ottawa, Ontario before being posted overseas in May 1940. He served with the Royal Canadian Air Force attached to the No. 419 Moose Squadron (Moosa Aswayita) as a Pilot Officer during World War II. Part of No. 6 Group Bomber Command, the squadron participated in raids on Osnabruck and the 3000-mile raids on Cologne and Bremen. On September 3, 1942, Pilot Officer Gerald Charles Hart and his crew were shot down six miles northwest of Dinant during an attack against Karlsruhe, Germany. He is commemorated at Warnant Communal Cemetery, Anhee, Namur, Belgium. Son of Emily Jane Hart of Neepawa; he was 25 years old. Gerald Hart Island in Diana Lake, Manitoba was named in his honour in 1985.
