He had a brother, Harold, and four sisters, Edith, Helen, Mildred and Mabel. Arthur’s first four years as an infant were spent in Winnipeg, then his parents moved the family to the Clanwilliam District. Arthur grew up working on the family farm near Hilltop, Manitoba (north of Clanwilliam), as well as hunting, trapping and logging. He received his education at Lakelet School, finishing with grade seven. Further education was not possible for Arthur as being the eldest child in the family meant staying home to help work on the farm. In July 1942, Arthur enlisted in the Canadian Army in Winnipeg, to Canadian Army Training Centre in Winnipeg and completed his basic training and learned the carpenter trade. Then Arthur was stationed with the Army Corps at Camp Borden, Ontario, for advanced training with a rifle, Bren machine gun, Sten sub machine gun, pistol, Piat portable anti-tank weapon, and the .50 caliber machine gun. Upon completion of his training, he was stationed with the 18th Armoured Car Regiment in Europe as a trooper serving in England, Belgium, Germany and the liberation of the Netherlands. While stationed in the Netherlands, Arthur met his future wife, Maria Wilhelmina Helthuis. After his honourable discharge from the Army in October 1946, he returned to Canada with Maria and settled in Minnedosa, Manitoba where they raised their two sons, Marvin Arthur and Brian Stanley. In Minnedosa, Arthur was employed with the Canadian Pacific Railroad as a Carman for most of his working career. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, boating, playing cards such as cribbage which he played very well, family camping, and visiting relatives. Maria was devoted to Arthur and their two sons. She worked hard at home making, gardening to produce a supply of food for each year, member of the 18th Armoured Car Ladies Auxiliary, and volunteered in the community. She loved to sing and dance, sew, bake, cook, and entertain friends and family. Arthur was a very active member of The Royal Canadian Legion joining Branch 138 in Minnedosa after he returned home from the war. Subsequent to moving to Alberta, he joined Branch 271 in St. Albert, Alberta. On December 31, 1981, Arthur and Maria moved to St. Albert to be closer to their family, and resided there until his death on October 26, 1997. He received from Branch 138 an honourary burial in the Legion internment plot of the Minnedosa Cemetery. On June 22, 2010, Maria passed away and was laid to rest next to Arthur.
