He joined the Army and served in England. He was a member of the Boissevain Branch 10 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 46 years. He passed away in 1992. BROWN, Francis “Wes” WWII Francis was born in Emo, Ontario, in 1913 and joined the 39th Company Canada Provost, serving in Canada. He passed away in 1978 and had been a member of Emo Gen Lipsett Branch 99 of The Royal Canadian Legion for over thirty years. BROWN, Fredrick George “Fred” WWII Fred was a third-generation farmer on land homesteaded by his grandfather since 1879, when he joined the Army on November 1, 1944, at Fort Osborne Barracks, Winnipeg. He was eighteen years old. His training took place in Winnipeg, followed by advanced infantry training in Shilo. On Christmas Eve, 1944, Fred married Eleanor Ross of Basswood, MB. She was clerking in a dry goods store in Minnedosa. The following spring, Fred got two months’ farm leave and also got leave that fall to help his father. His discharge became effective on November 3, 1945, and he returned to the farm. Three years later, he moved his family (two daughters and one son), to Flin Flon, MB to work in the mines, drilling underground for diamonds. In 1953, they left the north to return to Basswood where he took over the farm from his father. Fred and Eleanor farmed until 1989, then retired and moved to Minnedosa. Fred was a lifetime Royal Canadian Legion member and volunteered. He was a member Gen. Hugh Dyer Branch 138 in Minnedosa for 46 years. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. Fred passed away in 2019.
