39 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BOUTET, Joseph C. WWI &WWII Joseph was born in Saint Sauveur, PQ, in 1894. He enlisted in World War I in June 1916 with the Lord Strathcona Horse Regiment and was shipped to England in the fall of 1917 and assigned to the Royal Flying Corps as a mechanic and ground crew. At age 47, he enlisted in World War II with the Queens’s Own Cameron Highlanders on November 19, 1941. In 1942, he was sent to England and trained with tanks as part of the 2nd Canadian Armoured Brigade as a driver/mechanic in Aberdeen, Scotland. On June 6, 1944, the 2nd Brigade left England as part of the huge D-Day Force and he worked as part of the recovery unit to drive disabled tanks under their own power or on truck beds to the repair area. The brigade spent the winter of 1944-1945 in Nijmegen, Netherlands, on the Rhein and he was discharged on January 18, 1946, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Joseph passed away in 1992 and was a Life Member of Roseau Valley Branch #160 of The Royal Canadian Legion. BOWES, Elwood C. WWII Elwood was born and raised in Grandview, Manitoba, in 1917. He joined the war effort with his two brothers, Norman and Ivan. Once discharged, he worked for the telephone company and then transferred to the CNR where he worked until his retirement in 1980. Elwood remained an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 78 until his death in 1983, at the age of 63. BOWES, Ivan W. WWII Ivan was born and raised in Grandview, Manitoba, in 1916 and joined the war effort with his two brothers, Elwood and Norman, however, Ivan joined the Air Force rather than the Army and stayed in the forces after the war while posted at Lahr, Germany. Ivan was killed at age 41 in a highway traffic accident on the way to work.
