233 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca STEPHENSON, Hugh M. WWII Hugh was born in Minnedosa, Manitoba, in 1920. He served with the Met section of the Air Force at Port Hardy, trained at Petawawa, and was stationed at Rivers, Manitoba. Hugh passed away in 2009, and had been a member of Minnedosa Branch of The Royal Canadian Legion. STEVENS, Donald James “Don” RCMP Don, parents Percy and Marjorie, was born in 1941, having 2 brothers, 4 sisters, Hamiota, Manitoba, near the family farm in Kenton. Don loved horses. Attending school in Kenton, Don was a good athlete, especially hockey, playing with Kenton teams. He worked various jobs SK, AB, BC, then joined R.C.M.P. 1965, inspiring many to follow. 2023 is RCMP 150th anniversary. In depot training Don was the lead rider of horses. Stationed E Division, B.C., Vancouver Detachment, then Burnaby, he discharged 1968 following injuries from a car accident while on duty. He returned to ranching. Don had married Myrna Larson, teacher, from Tribune, Saskatchewan, having met 1963 Carstairs, AB, where Don ranched, and Myrna taught school. Love set, marriage followed, Weyburn, SK 1967, having to wait 2 years after enlistment RCMP regulations. They raised 3 sons, 10 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. Following Burnaby, they ranched Iron River AB, 8 years, 20 years Avonlea, SK, then Delia, AB. 20 years. Don, survived by all immediate family, died 2016 Sep 28 Calgary. He rests at Immanuel Cemetery near Tribune, Myrna’s youth home. Myrna now lives on a farm near Avonlea, SK. STEWART, John E. WWII John was born in the Mayfeld area in 1916. He enlisted with the Canadian Army in 1941 and was posted on the prairies followed by a transfer to Fort William, Ontario, and became a member of the 12th Manitoba Dragoons Regiment and was responsible for all stores and equipment. While serving in France, the 12th were frequently many miles ahead of other regiments and they developed a special bond which lasted many years and was continued on with the publishing of “The Staghound,” following the war. They also served in Holland and Belgium. John passed away on July 7, 2002, and is buried in the Portage la Prairie Cemetery. He was a member of Portage Branch 65 of The Royal Canadian Legion.
