He joined the 222nd Battalion (Band) and the Southern Manitoba Battalion Band serving in Canada and England. As a Bandsman, Bobbie was selected to play in a massed band of eighty representing Canada at the Lord Mayor’s Show on November 9, 1918. SAUNDERS, Frederick G. K. WWII Frederick was born in Fairmount District, near Basswood, MB, in 1921. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in April 1942, and was transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force in December 1942. He had extensive training in ground schools and flying training at Winnipeg, Saskatoon, and Prince Albert, graduating as a pilot from Dauphin, MB, in January 1944. Most of his flying time was on Lancaster Bombers in the 431st Squadron stationed at Croft, NE, England. He received the Distinguished Flying Medal on September 13, 1947, for a bombing run to Heide in March 1945, when his aircraft sustained severe damage in the port wing and the aircraft went into a dive. He succeeded in leveling out and turned away from the target. Frederick displayed great coolness and brought the aircraft down safely. He flew a Lancaster back to Canada after the war, and landed at Dartmouth, NS, in June 1945. He received his discharge in September 1945, and lived in Flin Flon following the war. Frederick passed away in 2004. SAUNDERS, Frederick J. WWI Frederick was born in Bridgewater, England, in 1891. He came to Canada to farm in the Basswood, MB, area. He went overseas with the CASC in 1917, but due to a medical condition he was transferred to the Forestry Corps and was later sent to the north of Scotland with his company to cut down forests. Frederick was a teamster in an all-Canadian outfit at a Canadian sawmill in Scotland. In September 1919, he and his new Scottish bride came back to Canada to Basswood, Manitoba. He passed away in 1989 and had been a member of Basswood, MB, Branch 229 of The Royal Canadian Legion.
