215 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca ROPER, Leonard WWI Leonard was born in Hartney District, Manitoba, and joined the 196th Battalion (Western Universities) re-enforcement 1st CMR and served in England. He was gassed in 1918, and sent for treatment to Manchester, England-Epsom. ROPER, S. T. WWI S. T. Roper was born in England. He joined the Hartney Platoon 222nd Battalion and transferred to the 1st Battalion then the 46th Battalion serving in Lens 1917, Lord Strathcona Horse Sanginton. He received shrapnel wounds in Lens in 1917, and was a POW at Sanginton on August 8, 1918, and spent two months in a German Hospital. RUNOLFSON, Helgi S. WWII Trooper Steve was born at Lundar, Manitoba, on January 27, 1918, and attended school in Lundar until his father’s untimely death. He worked for various farmers in the Lundar area. Steve joined the Canadian Armoured, First Hussars, 4th Troop “A” Squadron on September 23, 1941, serving in Germany, Belgium, Holland and Juno Beach. After the war, Steve worked for CN Telegraph for a year. On June 30, 1947, he married Ethel Jonasson and they both owned a very successful dairy farm in the Lundar area and retired in 1974. Steve was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Lundar Branch 185 and served as Sergeant-at-Arms for many years. He was always willing to help The Legion remain successful. He received the following medals: Bravery in the Field, the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, 1939-1945 George IV, and the Normandy Campaign Medal. He passed away in 2006.
