167 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca MAITLAND, G. T. M. “Tom” WWI Tom was born in Souris, Manitoba, in 1887. He joined the Canadian Army on May 4, 1916, and trained at Camp Hughes, now known as Camp Shilo, MB, and went overseas on a ship called the Grampian and saw service in Belgium and France with the 181st and 52nd Battalions. At the end of the war, he returned to Canada aboard the ship Olympic, a sister ship of the Titanic. Tom returned to his occupation as an employee of the Canadian Pacific Railway, where he was a locomotive engineer. On July 7, 1919, he married Anna Belle McDonald and they had four children. Tom was proud to serve under Lieutenant-Colonel W.W. Foster, Officer Commander of the 52nd Canadian Infantry Battalion. He passed away in 1975 and had been a member of Souris Branch #60 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 18 years. MAITLAND, George Kenneth WWII George was born in Souris, Manitoba, in 1925. He joined the Canadian Infantry Corps at Fort Osborne Barracks on April 20, 1944, and trained in Ontario and British Columbia, serving in Canada. He was discharged at Fort Osborne Barracks on April 25, 1946, and received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. Ken passed away on May 21, 1990, and had been a member of Souris Branch 60 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 45 years. MARTEL, Wilfred A. WWII Wilfred, son of Albert and Mary Martel, of Fillmore, Saskatchewan, was born in 1915 in Deleau, Manitoba. He enlisted into the Royal Canadian Engineers on December 16, 1941. He was posted throughout Canada for basic and advanced training before being stationed in England prior to D-Day. As a member of the 20th Field Company RCE, he took part in the liberation of the Low Countries of Northern Europe. It was during the battle for Arnhem/Nijmegen that Wilfred, at age 29, was fatally wounded on April 29, 1945. He is commemorated on Page 539 of the Second World War Book of Remembrance and is interred in the Holten Canadian War Cemetery in the Netherlands. He was given the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, Defence Medal and War Medal 1939-1945.
