He enlisted in Winnipeg, on December 12, 1940 serving with the Air Force in Canada during World War II. His service number was R-80490. He was discharged in Winnipeg on June 12, 1945. GEMMILL, Frank R. WWII Frank was born in Cartwright, Manitoba, in 1923 and joined the 8th Canadian Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment 70th Battery, 4th Division in the early 1940’s and saw active services in Normandy through France, Belgium, Holland and into Germany. Following the end of the war, he resided in Calgary, AB, where he married and raised a family of three children. Frank received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal 1939-1945, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Overseas Clasp, and the War Medal 1939-1945. Frank passed away in 1996. GEMMILL, John J. WWII John was born in Cartwright, Manitoba, in 1908. He joined the Army in 1942, after taking his schooling in Cartwright. John served in Canada, England and Scotland. One of his duties was guarding enemy prisoners. He was honourably discharged in 1946 and returned to Cartwright where he bought a farm working the land until he retired. For a few years he was ice-maker at the local curling rink. John passed away in 1991 and was a member of Carthwright-Mather Branch 86 of The Royal Canadian Legion for over 25 years.
