85 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca CLAKE, Arthur John “Jack” WWII Arthur John Clake was born in 1920 in the Roland, Manitoba district. Jack enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in November 1941. Basic military training and aircrew selection was done at #3ITS, Victoriaville, Quebec in August 1942. Jack went on for pilot training to #4EFTS at Windsor Mills, Quebec where he trained on Tiger Moths. Jack received his pilot’s wings while training on Harvards at #13 SFTS, St. Hubert, Quebec. Then, Jack was posted to #3FIS Arnprior, Ontario flying Cornells. Next posting #3B&GS MacDonald, MB flying Fairey Battles and Bolingbrokes. In September 1944, Jack embarked for the United Kingdom. His was close if not the last aircrew troopship to go over. His postings in England were #24EFTS Sealand Cheshire and #3EFTS Shellingford Berks, both with the RAF. By then it was too late to fly operationally, and Jack returned home in September 1945. After the war, Jack worked for the C.P.R. and the Saskatchewan Government while instructing student pilots part-time at Centralia, ON and Regina, SK. Arthur passed away in 2003. CLAKE, Charles Edward WWII Charles Edward Clake was born in 1916 on the home farm in the Roland, Manitoba district. He had taken radio courses before the war and continued along that path after joining the Royal Canadian Air Force. He trained in Ontario until qualified as a wireless technician and embarked overseas in December 1941. In England, he served with the Royal Air Force in the London area, later with the RCAF in North Yorkshire. Ted returned home in June 1945, took over the family farm and continued to farm until retirement. Charles passed away in 2006. CLANCY, Vincent WWII Vincent enlisted in Winnipeg in 1940 and served at the rank of Corporal in Canada and overseas. His service unit was the Dental Corp.
