239 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca MINTY, Alexander F. “Fred” WWII Fred was born in Rocanville, Saskatchewan in 1925. He was working in Toronto in 1942 when he decided to join the Royal Canadian Air Force at the age of seventeen. He trained at Trenton, Ontario, then on to the bombing and gunnery school at McDonald, Manitoba. He received his air gunner’s wings and left on the Queen Mary for England in 1943. He was stationed at Tholthorpe with the 425 Alouette Squadron as the mid-upper gunner on the Halifax bomber. Now a sergeant, he went on to complete 35 missions over enemy territory. On September 11, 1944, he received a commission as pilot officer. Fred was discharged on March 20, 1945 at the age of twenty. He returned to his hometown of Onanole, Manitoba and married Norma and raised one daughter, Barbara, and one son, Brian. Fred was very well respected in the community being involved in its affairs and running a business. His large model aircrafts which he built and mounted in his yard were enjoyed by everyone. Fred passed in 2018 having been predeceased by his wife Norma. The French Legion of Honour was awarded posthumously on May 28, 2019 at the Erickson Legion Branch 143. MORRISON, Allan Savage WWII Allan was born in Montreal, Quebec in 1916. He joined the Royal Canadian Engineers and fought overseas in World War II from 1942 to 1946. He served in France, Germany, Italy and Holland. He was honourably discharged with rank of Sergeant and brought home 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and War Medal 1939-1945. Upon returning home he subsequently served in the reserves from 1954 to 1957 with 6th Hussars and six years with the 3rd Field Engineer Regiment as SQMS. Allan was a third generation C.P. Rail employee at Windsor Station and at Park Avenue Station from 1939 until his retirement in 1977. He moved to Foster and worked as a security guard for Clairol until 1988. He was devoted to The Royal Canadian Legion and was a member of Flander’s 63 in Montreal and served as President for three years from 1942 to 1975. He was a deputy commander from 1974 to 1976 then commander for West District between 1976 and 1978. Upon retirement, he transferred to Shefford Branch 77 in Waterloo, serving as president for two years then Provincial Representative to Quebec Command in 1983. Allan passed away 2002. NEIL, Joseph Allen WWI Joseph was born in Quebec in 1895. He served with the Army with the 1st Depot Battalion Manitoba Regiment in Canada. Joseph died of Pleurisy in Brandon Hospital while in service.
