229 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca LONG, Harold Frank “Harry” WWI Harry Long enlisted in Winnipeg in 1916. He joined the Canadian Railway Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force and served in England and France as Sapper. He returned to Winnipeg in 1919 and received his discharge. Harry lived in Winnipeg until his death. His wife Edith and children Nellie and Bill survive him. LONG, James Edward “Jim” WWII Jim enlisted in the Army in June 1940 with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. He took basic training in Winnipeg and at Camp Shilo from June 1940 to October 1940. He then went to Debert, Nova Scotia with the battalion where he continued to train with limited equipment (trucks used for tanks, stove pipes used for mortars). On August 28, 1941, he entrained for Halifax with the battalion where they boarded the SS Orbita and sailed to England, landing there on September 12, 1941. They were stationed in the south of England. Training continued both defensive and offensive but with adequate equipment. On June 6 (D-Day), 1944 Jim landed in Normandy, France with the battalion. He saw action in Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was not wounded or taken prisoner. In September 1945, he returned to Canada and was discharged in October 1945. He was awarded the “Belgium Croix de Guerre 1940 avec Palme” for his service. He lived in Camrose, Alberta. LONG, Joseph William WWI Joseph enlisted in the Army in 1915 in Winnipeg. He joined the 61st Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. Later he transferred to the 44th Infantry Battalion. He served in England and France during World War I. Joseph Long was killed in action on May 10, 1917 in France.
