223 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca KENT (KOSTYNIUK), Donald Melvin “Mel” WWII Melvin enlisted in the RCAF enlisted in 1940 as an aero-engine mechanic (fitter) and after training at St. Thomas, Ontario was posted to Dauphin Service Flying School to service aircraft. After two years he was promoted to corporal and was sent to Rockcliffe, Ontario on an instructor’s course to teach trade improvement classes back at his station. The war was nearly over and flying schools were being closed and Mel was made an acting sergeant, “descip” in charge of closing Dauphin and then Yorkton Flying Schools. In order to get a discharge from the Air Force, one had to have a job to go to. Mel was hired as photographer and manager at Russell Photo Studio in Yorkton. This facilitated his discharge in 1945. Mel and his family returned to Winnipeg and he worked in photo studios then returned to teaching in St. Vital and Selkirk. He continued his education, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree, with a major in Industrial Arts. Mel had many and varied teaching positions while living in Winnipeg with his wife Mavis. LAMBERT, Daniel Evert PEACETIME Dan enlisted into the Royal Canadian Air Force at the rank of Officer Cadet early in 1965. He trained in Ontario, New Brunswick and Manitoba as flying navigator. Whilst training and flying, one of his flights was over the Interlake. He remained there for two years. Later in 1968, Dan went to the United States and was in the USA Selective Service. In 1979, he served during Civilian Peacetime on the “Distant Early Warning” line in the Canadian Arctic. He was registered with the USA Secret Service for this operation. Daniel was an associate member of The Royal Canadian Legion Hodgson Branch for several years. He lived in Winnipeg. LARENCE, Joe WWI Joe, John and Eugene (Harry) were the sons of Jim and Eleanor (Lagimodiere) Larence who came from St Laurent. Jim moved to Fisher Branch, Manitoba after the death of his wife at St-Ambroise in 1901. Harold, son of Harry Larence, served in World War II. Joe was born in February 1866. He joined the 12th Battalion - France. He was overseas and was gassed at the second battle of Ypres and was also wounded in France. He returned to Canada in 1918. Joe passed away in 1936.
