219 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca HASLEN, Ralph Leonard WWII Ralph was born in 1912. He was advised to join in the spring of 1940 to avoid difficult living conditions at the Army training centre in Winnipeg during the winter. He joined the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry in Winnipeg on May 1, 1940 and became part of the special forces division. He served in Canada, the United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean Area, and Continental Europe. He was sent along with the rest of his platoon, ahead of the rest of the army to prepare and set up the target areas to be attacked. Ralph was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He was discharged on September 7, 1945. His fondest memory was when Field Marshall Montgomery came to tour the base camp, they were not to let him be too close to the enemy lines. Ralph, knowing that F. M. Montgomery would really enjoy being right up front where the action was, took him as close as he could. While the Senior Officers cringed with fear, that something would happen, but Ralph returned with him. Upon returning with F.M. Montgomery, he sat and offered him a cup of tea and he felt right at home. Ralph was given a beautiful citation from the Field Marshall for his unquestioned purpose in the war on September 7, 1945. HICKMAN, John Thomas WWI John was born in Nottinghamshire, England in 1891. He enlisted in the Army and served with the 222 Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force in England, France and Canada during World War I. John was killed in action in France on August 10, 1918. HOLROYD, Dallas Ellis WWI Dallas was born in Douglas, Isle of Man in 1887. He enlisted in the Army and served with the 44th Battalion in France and Belgium during World War I. He was killed in action in France in 1917.
