173 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca ELLIOTT, James “Wilfred” WWI Wilfred was born in Oakland Municipality, Manitoba in 1897. His service unit was the 195th Battalion, while he served in France. He went overseas in 1916 and was wounded August 15, 1917 at Hill 70. He was awarded the Military Medal on that occasion and his citation read: “On August 15, 1917, when his section commander was wounded, Private Elliott took command of the machine gun and section and showed great coolness and bravery at a critical time to an advanced position. Though himself wounded, he continued to fire his gun till it was completely put out of action by shell-fire.” Wilfred returned home in December 1918 after spending two weeks in a Hospital in France and two and a half months in a Hospital in England where they had inserted a metal plate in the top of his head to cover his wound. Wilfred later discovered he could no longer live in a cold climate because of this metal plate. He first tried living in British Columbia but eventually went to California where he lived for the rest of his life. Wilfred passed away in 1984. EMERY, Herbert G. WWII Herbert was born in London, Ontario in 1902. He served in World War II with the No 1 CdM Toronto. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Flin Flon Branch 73. EMERY, James W. WWII James was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta in 1906. He served in Canada in World War II with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Flin Flon Branch 73. James passed away in 1955.
