141 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca DIX, Albert J. WWI Albert was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England in 1884. He served with the Fort Garry Horse in Canada during World War I. He came to Canada in 1911 and worked on Prince of Wales Ranch and then returned to England following the War. In 1928, he returned with a family, wife and two children. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Carman Branch 18. Albert passed away in 1958. DIXON, Oliver Lyle WWII Oliver was born on September 20, 1923 at his family farm near Kenville, Manitoba where he grew up and went to school. At the age of nineteen, on November 6, 1942, he enlisted in the Army. He took his basic training in Fort Garry where he received his G.M.T. and basic gunnery. By April 1943, he was a qualified Driver I/C Class III (W&T) and qualified Driver Mechanic (W&T). In September 1943, he received his Motor Vehicle Mechanic (M.V.) Group “B”. He was then posted with Lord Strathcona Horse RCASC where he served as driver, driver instructor and general troop duties. In May 1945, he embarked overseas serving in England, Holland, and Germany where he was promoted to Sergeant. After the end of the war, he volunteered for Army Occupation until his return to civil life on August 13, 1946. On his return, he received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp as well as the War Medal 1939-1945. On November 9, 1946, he married Buddie Brolund. He operated the family farm until his retirement in 1974. Upon moving to Swan River, he worked at Swan Valley Lodge and Personal Care home where he was maintenance supervisor. Oliver was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 39 where he received his 50-year pin and served as President from 1969 to 1970. He also held the position of Zone Commander. Oliver passed away on August 30, 1998 and is bur ied in the Legion Plot in Birchwood Cemetery in Swan River.
