89 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca EINARSSON, Agust WWI Agust was born in Iceland, the son of Einar and Asa Benjaminson. He enlisted in Winnipeg on March 26, 1916 with the 223rd and was later transferred to the 230th. He trained at Brockville, Ontario and went to England on March 4, 1917. He served in Europe with the 114th Forestry Corps. He returned to Canada on December 20, 1918. He had a small farm at Vider, Manitoba but worked mainly as a labourer spending a lot of time in the community. He is deceased. ERVICK, Cyril R. WWII Cyril was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1922 and joined the Army with the South Saskatchewan Regiment at 21 years old. He took most of his basic training in Winnipeg at Fort Osborne Barracks and when he was shipped to the front lines along the French/Belgian border, he was number one gunner on a three-inch mortar. He served in France and in Belgium during World War II. Cyril was hospitalized for about a month from being shell shocked, but ended up back on the front lines again until the Germans surrendered. By volunteering to go to Japan and carry on fighting, he was given a month back in Winnipeg as a reward. Three days after landing in Winnipeg, he married Alice Blanche and shortly after that he found out that he didn’t have to go back to war since the Japanese had surrendered. Cyril went back to his former carpentry job and he and Alice raised four children: three boys and a girl. He has been a member of Norwood Legion Branch 43 for 31 years. ESSEX, Walter Roy WWII Roy was born on December 27, 1921 in Stonewall, MB where his parents owned a farm. He enlisted in the Army in 1941 and was sent to Portage la Prairie for basic training with the PPCLI and then sent on to Camp Shilo for advanced infantry training. He served in England, Italy and Holland during World War II. In the spring of 1942, Roy sailed on HMS Queen Mary to Aldershot, England where he completed training as a driver/mechanic. From England, he was sent to Italy in 1943 and as a member of a PPCLI Mortar Platoon experienced heavy fighting around Livorno (Leghorn) and took part in the Battle of Ortona. Roy contracted malaria in Italy but returned to his PPCLI Platoon embarked for France where he took part in the liberation of Holland and the capturing of the city of Apeldoorn in April 1945. Roy was with the PPCLI when they entered Amsterdam on May 7, 1945, the day before Germany surrendered. Roy sailed home on HMS Princess Elizabeth to return to the farm in Stonewall. He later moved to Winnipeg where he worked for various firms including the CNR. He married his wife of over 65 years, Wilma, in 1950. Roy is a Life Member of Henderson Highway Legion Branch 215 with over 69 years of service.
