85 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca DRISCOLL, Harold C. WWII Harold was born in Beaver, Manitoba in 1918. He enlisted in the Army and served with the RCACD, 5th Armoured Core out of Halifax during World War II. In Europe, he took supplies into the fighting areas and brought out the injured. Harold and his three brothers rode the rails to Toronto and signed up on June 17, 1941. On February 24, 1944, Private Harold Driscoll is listed as “wounded” in the Winnipeg Tribune. His truck had gone over a cliff in Italy. He was discharged on December 15, 1945 and on January 25, 1946, he was paid $934.79 for his time in the Army; Harold served 1442 days, almost four years. He was awarded the GM, 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, Germany and France Star, Defence Medal, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. Harold passed away in 2010. DUNBAR, Robert WWII Robert was born in 1926 and signed up for the Royal Canadian Navy in 1943. He served in Canada, Northern Ireland, England and Gibraltar during World War II. He was aboard the Frigate HMCS Charlottetown which left Halifax to Derry, Northern Ireland and then onto Portsmouth, England. Robert escorted two convoys to and from Gibraltar and back again to Halifax. Robert married Terry Vulliez in 1950 and they had two girls and one boy. He retired from the Post Office in 1990. Robert has been a member of Norwood Legion Branch 43. DUNN, Sam PEACETIME Sam was born in Quill Lake, Saskatchewan in 1943 and signed up with the 2nd Battalion, North Division Reserves in Saskatoon in 1960. He took his basic training in Saskatoon and spent the summers learning about weaponry, target practice and driving large trucks. Sam spent two years in the Reserves and returned to work on the family farm and with the Blucher Municipality. He later moved to Winnipeg and worked for Versatile Farm Equipment. He was married and divorced and has two boys. He is retired, lives in Winnipeg and has been a member of Norwood Legion Branch 43.
