He joined the Army in 1952 when it was known as the Bermuda Artillery Association. He was assigned to Bermuda during Peacetime for training and handled shells up to six inches in size. He was released in 1954, but had to serve six months as a “home guard” to help the police and do work; which included working at the local funeral home. He moved to America shortly afterward to pursue a course as a chef and upon graduating, came to Winnipeg and after going back and forth from Winnipeg to Bermuda, he finally settled in Winnipeg and worked as a chef until he retired. He has been a member of Norwood Legion Branch 43. DODDS, Henry N. WWII Henry was born in Elgin, Manitoba in 1915. He enlisted in the Army and served with the RCA in England and Northwest Europe during World War II. Henry received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945. He was a member of Legion Branch 3 for over twenty years. Henry passed away in 1984. DOWNING, Leslie E. WWII Leslie was born on a farm in the community of Lenore, Manitoba on June 1, 1921. He volunteered in the Canadian Army with the 19th Field Canadian Artillery on October 15, 1942 at Brandon, MB. He served in England, Belgium, France, Holland, and Germany during World War II. He was a member of the Gun Crew. Leslie was discharged on January 15, 1946. Upon returning home, with the help of VLA, he decided to go farming. He and his wife Louise are still active and continue to enjoy their farm. He joined the Virden Legion Branch 8 and has been a member for approximately 55 years. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Overseas Bar, 1939-1945 War Medal, and France Legion of Honour Medal.
