81 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca DAVIDSON, Leifur Alexander “Sandy” WWI Leifur was born in Baldur, Manitoba on December 2, 1896, the son of Gunnlaugur and Margaret Davidson. He enlisted on June 29, 1915 in Winnipeg with the 61st Battalion. He participated in the Battle of Somme, Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele, Amiens, Arras, Cambrai and Valenciennes. He was wounded on two occasions. He was awarded two medals while serving with the 78th Battalion, the Military Medal and Bar at Passchendaele as well as the Distinguished Service Medal. Sandy farmed in the Mimir District until retiring to Baldur. He passed away on June 11, 1968. DELORME, Ernest N. WWII Ernest was born in Mariapolis, Manitoba, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thos Delorme. He enlisted at Winnipeg, Manitoba in December 1942 and trained at Victoria, British Columbia. He was stationed at Victoria, Prince Rupert and overseas in England. He joined the Pacific Force in England in 1945. He was discharged in March 1946. After the war, he made his home in St. Alphonse, MB where he farmed. He married Smelda Dupries of St. Jean Baptiste in November 1946. DIETRICH, Jeffery John REGULAR FORCE Jeffery was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba on April 11, 1968. He enrolled in the Navy on February 20, 1987 at the age of eighteen and entered CFSAL on May 1, 1987. He was posted to SPL on September 28, 1987 and did Peacekeeping in Yugoslavia. Master Seaman J. J. Dietrich’s postings include: HMCS Preserver, First Canadian Submarine Squadron, HMCS Onondaga, MAROPSGRU HQ, HMCS Windsor and HMCS Corner Brook. He spent most of his twenty years of service as a submariner. A newspaper clipping from Barrow-in-Furness, United Kingdom, read: “Sub training everyone is a system expert. Given the dangerous nature of submarine operations, every submariner must be able to respond to an emergency regardless of where he is in the boat. He may find himself responding as a watch keeper for one emergency and crawling into someone’s bunk to shut a valve for the next”. Jeff retired on October 10, 2006 being presented with the Lieutenant Governor’s Certificate, Environment Certificate, Marlant Certificate, the Formations Foods Certificate and the Logistics Certificate.
