79 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca CUTHBERT, Sydney John “Syd” WWI Syd was born in East Sutton, Kent, England, the son of Charles and Eliza (Wickens) Cuthbert. Syd enlisted at Brandon, training there and then being sent to England. He married Emily Louise Brinkworth on November 15, 1920. They had two sons, Jack and Leonard. Syd and Lou farmed at Glenora, Manitoba. Syd is now deceased. DARLING, Calvin B. WWII Private Clavin B. Darling was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on March 31, 1926, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Garnet Darling. Calvin enlisted at Ft. Osborne in Winnipeg in October 1944. He trained at Fort Garry and Camp Shilo. He was stationed at Portage la Prairie and at Vernon, BC for Pacific training. He was discharged in April 1946. He served in CIC Regiment and PPCLI when training for Pacific. He married Gladys Mabon of Neelin on July 22, 1950. They had two sons and two daughters. He has been a member of Baldur Legion and farmed. DAVIDSON, Lawrence WWII Lawrence was born in Cypress River, Manitoba, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Davidson. He enlisted at Winnipeg on September 19, 1941 and trained at Edmonton, Claresholme SF TS, McDonald B & G, RCAF. He was stationed overseas at Wickenby, Lincolnshire – 12 Squadron, Kirmington, Lincolnshire – 166 Squadron, RAF, Dalton, Yorkshire RCAF. He graduated as Sergeant/Air Gunner, RCAF, in January 1943. He was discharged in Winnipeg in October 1945 with the rank of Flying Officer. Lawrence’s plane was shot up over the continent – crashed down over Lincolnshire on return to England. Two crew members survived. He lived at Baldur where he farmed. He married Joyce Mortimer in York, England on February 3, 1945. They had one son, John and two daughters, Dorothy and Audrey. Lawrence was Secretary-Treasurer of the Baldur Legion Branch 108; a Past President and Immediate Past Zone Commander.
