63 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca CHAMPIGNY, Omer Louis RCMP Omer was born in Moose Jaw, SK in 1950. He was recruited into the RCMP just six months out of high school. He was sworn-in in Regina, SK and reported to Depot Division for training on October 19. He graduated on April 13, 1970 and his first posting was to the province of Quebec where he found himself in the middle of the FLQ crisis. Not comfortable there, he went on to serve in Ontario, Manitoba, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Being young and single as many were in those days, he found himself transferred to numerous postings without consultation. While posted in Ottawa in the summer of 1990 and because of his being bilingual, he found himself along with many other RCMP officers sent to the front lines of the OKA crisis. In this particular setting, the natives outgunned the RCMP and made for a very tenuous situation. Omer did ten years of federal duties, ten years of contract policing, ten years of specialized training and the final five years in Human Relations. After 35 years of service, Sergeant Champigny retired in 2005 and was awarded the RCMP Long Service Medal with gold Clasp. Omer has been a member of Legion Branch 79 for twelve years. CHARETTE, Archie Joseph Arthur WWI Archie was born in St. Norbert, the son of Francois and Marguerite Charette. He enlisted in Winnipeg and served overseas with the 221 Battalion. While in action, he was a victim of mustard gas poisoning from which he suffered the rest of his life and caused his death in 1942. He married Francis Jewel on February 20, 1917, and they had ten children: Bert, Gertrude, Beatrice, Fred, David, Stan, Lewis, Alec, Olive and Duncan. Archie farmed for many years south of Greenway. CHOQUETTE, Edmund WWII Edmund was born in Mariapolis, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Choquette of Glenora. He enlisted in the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders and went overseas in 1941. He paid the supreme sacrifice and was killed in action.
