61 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca CARRUTHERS, Roy A. WWI Roy was born in Charlevoix, Michigan, USA on January 18, 1901. He moved with his parents at a very early age to Winnipeg. He enlisted in the Army on June 27, 1916 at the age of fifteen in Winnipeg with the 76 Battery, Canadian Field Artillery 2 Canadian Heavy Battery, RCA. He served in Canada, England, France and Belgium during World War I. Roy was awarded the 1914-1918 Star. After being discharged after World War I, he worked for Winnipeg Hydro, working at Seven Sisters Falls during the construction; when Manitoba Hydro took over Winnipeg Hydro, Roy stayed with the hydro companies rising to becoming District Man at various places in Manitoba. He went to Meter and Transformer department in Brandon where he retired in 1967. He was a member of Brandon Legion Branch 3 for many years. Ron passed away on June 28, 1981 leaving wife Margaret, two sons and four grandchildren. CATTEEUW, Remi Joseph WWI Remi was born in Winckel St. Eloi, West Flanders, Belgium, son of Octavis and Camiel Catteeuw. He enlisted with the 222nd at Cypress River, Manitoba and trained at Camp Hughes before going overseas. He was wounded at the Battle of Vimy Ridge and was hospitalized for six months in Scotland following which he was honourably discharged as being medically unfit for further service. He married Hortense Van Hooff on April 20, 1920 and they had a family of three children: Arthur, Rachel Bray and Gabriel Frederickson. Remi farmed in the St. Alphonse district before buying the farm immediately east of the town of Baldur. He passed away in 1949. CEBULA, Marion “Mart” WWII Marion was born to Henryk and Agnieszka in Gorzyczany, Poland in 1922 and immigrated to Canada in 1930. He served in the Canadian Army from 1943 to 1946 as a Rifleman with the Little Black Devils 8th Battalion CEF. He served in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Continental Europe during World War II. He received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, and War Medal 1939-1945. Marion was wounded in action and spent one year after the war in England recovering before returning to Canada to the family farm in Kilkenny, Manitoba. He later moved to Winnipeg and got married to Donna McFarlane on October 4, 1958 and they had two sons, Lance and Lane (Char) and two granddaughters Kyra and Nia. Marion passed away on February 1, 2015 and was buried in Brookside Cemetery.
