49 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BREWER, Ernest C. “Bud” WWII Bud was born in Fort William, Ontario (Thunder Bay) in 1923. He enlisted in the Air Force and served in England with 426 Squadron during World War II. Bud learned to fly at “Bishop’s Field” in Fort William with instructor Orville J. Weiben, who owned Superior Airways Ltd. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 as a Gunner on Lancasters, based in England. While on a mission over Germany, mechanical issues forced the crew to bail out. He was taken prisoner and remained a Prisoner of War for fourteen months until war’s end in Stalag 3 (Germany). After the war, he worked for the Department of Transport at Fort William Airport, but continued his flying, winning the coveted Webster Trophy. He re-enlisted in 1952 and served all over the world. The last three years before retiring in 1970, were spent at 448 Test Squadron in Cold Lake, Alberta. He then worked for Len Wood Supply Company retiring in 1987. He was a member of Legion Branch 6 in Fort William, Ontario. Bud passed away in 1997. BRIDGE, Douglas WWII Douglas Bridge was born in Carman, Manitoba, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bridge (manager of Royal Bank at Baldur). He married Bertha Rathwell in 1954 and they later had four children – Janice, Lorna, Warren and Maureen. He enlisted in Winnipeg in RCNVR and trained at Chippawa, Cornwallis and Hyacinthe and was stationed at Halifax. Douglas is a member of St. James Legion and after the war lived in Winnipeg and was employed at John Taylor Collegiate as principal. BRINKWORTH, George WWII George was born on November 13, 1910, son of George and Rose (Bannerman) Brinkworth. He was born in the RM of Brittania, Saskatchewan. He made his home in Estevan but spent considerable time working in the RM of Argyle before enlisting at Regina on July 7, 1942. He spent 410 days overseas with the RCAMC attaining rank of Sergeant. On return from overseas, he was employed as a customs officer. On August 24, 1950, he married Muriel G. Cottrell. George passed away on May 2, 1968 in Toronto.
