47 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BRECHKA, Peter WWII Peter was born in Sifton, Manitoba in 1917. He enlisted in the Navy and served in Sherbrook, Riviere-du-Loup and on the High Seas during World War II. Peter passed away in 1988. BRECKNELL, Dale Heron WWII Dale was born on November 4, 1922 in Drake, Saskatchewan and was raised on a farm in Pelly, SK. He enlisted in the Army in Winnipeg, Manitoba on April 27, 1942. Dale trained in Kingston, Ontario to become a Motorcycle Dispatch Rider in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. He was sent to England during World War II and was attached to the Signal Unit, F Section, 2nd Field Regiment of Artillery, Canadian 1st Division at Eastbourne, England. Dale trained in England, Wales, and Scotland before loading on a landing ship tank, landing in Sicily on July 10, 1943. He also served in Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Dale acquired malaria and dysentery while in Sicily and Italy and was also injured in a Jeep accident. He arrived home on New Year’s Eve 1946. Dale was discharged on February 18, 1946 and soon began a career in construction. He was a member of MacGregor Legion Branch. Dale passed away on July 30, 2014. BREIDAL, Skarphedin WWII Skarphedin was born in Baldur, Manitoba the son of Jon and Gudbjorg Breidal. He enlisted at Portage la Prairie and trained at Ottawa, Camp Borden and Shilo. He served in the Medical Corps and Regimental Police (RCAMC).
