37 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BJARNARSON, Karl WWI Kari was born in Churchbridge, Saskatchewan on January 4, 1893, the son of Sigfus and Gudfinna Bjarnarson. He enlisted at Winnipeg on March 3, 1916 with the 223rd Battalion training at Winnipeg, Toronto and Camp Borden. He served in England and in France at Canal du Nord, Cambrai and Bourbon Wood where he as wounded on October 11, 1918. He returned to Canada on April 3, 1919 and on November 4, 1921, he married Lillian Claughton. They had two daughters, Finna Bolack and Bena Arnold. They came to Baldur in 1938 and operated the Baldur Trading until July 31, 1960. The couple retired in Baldur. BJORNSON, Arni WWI Arni was born on August 4, 1897, the son of Bjorn and Sigridur Bjornson. He enlisted in Winnipeg in March 1917. He trained in Portage la Prairie and went overseas on April 24 and on to France on June 17, 1917. He served in the 223rd Infantry (The Scandinavian Vikings). He also served with the 27th Battalion, City of Winnipeg, in France and Belgium (Passchendaele). He was transferred to the 4th Machine Gun Battalion at Amiens, Arras, Boulogne Woods; was wounded at Cambrai. After the Armistice he stayed in Belgium all winter – at Namur and Waterloo. He returned to Canada on June 19, 1919 and participated in the Colonial Parade in London in May 1919. Arnie married Vala (Valgerdur) Gunnlaugson on June 27, 1941 and they later had one daughter, Ingibjorg (Inga Andries). Arnie was a charter member of The Royal Canadian Legion, a Life Member and Past President of the Baldur Branch. Alex Fowler taught Arni harness-making and he worked fifty years in Fowler’s Shoe Store until he retired in 1964. BJORNSON, Fred WWII Fred was born in Cypress River, Manitoba, the son of Gisli and Gudrun. He enlisted at Brandon and trained at Portage la Prairie and was stationed at Shilo, Winnipeg; Saint John, New Brunswick and Gander, Newfoundland. He served overseas in Bermuda for three years. He married Doreen Christie in 1952 and they later had three children: Larry, Arlene and Ray. Fred was employed with Glenboro Creamery.
