33 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BENGE, Arthur H. WWII Arthur was born in Killarney, the son of Francis and Frances Benge. He enlisted at Minnedosa and trained at Fort Osborne, Gordon Head, Brandon and Halifax. Arthur married Isabel McKnight in July 1938. They had two daughters, Karen and Frances. After the war, he was an implement agent at Killarney, Manitoba; while living in Baldur he was manager of a Co-op Store where Gulf Oil Ltd. is now situated. BENNETT, Theodore J. WWII Theodore was born in Toronto in 1921. He enlisted in the Army on September 16, 1939 and served with the 2nd Division Signals Corp during World War II. He was sent to England on December 13, 1940 attached to the South Saskatchewan Regiment. Theodore was captured at Dieppe in August 1942 and was a Prisoner of War in Stalag 8-B and Stalag 2-D, Mecklinburg and Grevesmühlen. He was liberated by the Americans in 1945. He was awarded the special commendation – Knight in French Legion of Honour. He has been a member of Elmvale Legion Branch 262 for forty years. BIGGS, Charles B. “Bev” WWII Bev was born in Belleville, Ontario in 1923. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy at the age of seventeen as a wireless telegraph operator. He served onboard HMCS Prince Robert, Prince Henry, Goderich and Kapuskasing sailing the High Seas and coastal waters around North America and into the Great Lakes during World War II. After the war, he worked several shore wireless stations in Churchill, Manitoba and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. In 1947, he married a Port Arthur girl and they settled in Dartmouth until his discharge from the Navy in 1948. They returned to Port Arthur where Bev took a job as a lineman with the Port Arthur Public Utilities Commission. He worked as a station operator and safety and personal officer in later years, moving to superintendent of Stations for Thunder Bay until his retirement in 1982. He was a long-time member of the Amateur Radio Club and his call signs VE3ECA and VE3HMU were well known on the airwaves. Bev passed away in 1995.
