263 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca PORTER, Thomas Johnstone “Tom” WWI Thomas was born at Baldur, Manitoba, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Porter. He enlisted at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in the PPCLI with whom he served when he was wounded in the 2nd Battle of Vimy Ridge. He carried a bullet in his lung for the rest of his life. Tom married Margareite Lang and they had one son, Donald George, who worked as a pilot for Air Canada. Tom is deceased. REID, Jack R. WWII Jack, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Reid of the Bru District near Cypress River, enlisted in the RCAF, training at Brandon, Winnipeg, Dafoe, Regina, Calgary and Rivers, where he was commissioned as a Pilot Officer. Jack went overseas where he served in Continental Europe. RICKTER, Hjortur WWI Hjortur was born at Baldur, Manitoba. He was a brother of the late Mr. John Bardarson and a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Rickter. He enlisted with the 223rd in Winnipeg and later took up residence in the USA where he passed away some years ago. SAEDAL, Robert August “Bob” WWII Bob was born at Baldur, Manitoba in 1916, the son of August and Minerva Saedal. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy, retiring after twenty years of service as a Chief Petty Officer. He and his wife Veronica had two sons, Robert of Montreal and Brian of California. Bob passed away on December 2, 1971 in Vancouver, British Columbia. SEWELL, Walter H. WWI Walter was born in Theale, Berkshire, United Kingdom in 1894. He enlisted in the Army and served in France with the 44th Battalion during World War I. Walter was killed in action while in France in 1917. SIGURDSON, Paul WWII Paul was born in the Municipality of Argyle, Manitoba, the son of Herbert and Kristros Sigurdson. He married Elizabeth H. Baulin in October 1943, and they lived in Brandon, MB where he was employed as a supervisory letter carrier. Paul enlisted at Shilo in 1941, trained at Portage and Winnipeg, and served overseas in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. STANDING, Clarence WWI Clarence was born at Marringhurst in 1894, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Standing. He was farming at Marringhurst when he enlisted at Brandon and went overseas with the 46th Battalion in the spring of 1916. He was killed on October 26, 1917 at the Battle of Passchendaele and is buried in the British Cemetery there. TAPSELL, Richard “Dick” WWI Richard “Dick” Tapsell was a lad brought to Canada by Wm. Mathers from England. He worked as a labourer in the district immediately south-west of Baldur. He enlisted at Baldur, was sent to Europe where he paid the supreme sacrifice. WARD, Amos WWI Amos was born at Carberry, Manitoba, the son of James Alexander and Mary Jane Ward. He enlisted at Baldur in June 1917, training at Camp Seoul. He served overseas in France and Belgium with the 27th Battalion. Amos farmed south-west of Baldur for many years prior to his death. WAUGH, Ross C. WWII Ross was born on September 11, 1922, the son of Stella (Cornock) and C. L. Waugh. He enlisted in Winnipeg in 1940, serving in Canada at St. Thomas and Dauphin. Ross married Helen Leclercq of Winnipeg and they had a daughter, Laurie. They lived in Winnipeg where he was employed as a computer operator with the CNR. WINFIELD, Hope PEACETIME Hope was born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1979. She enlisted in the Army in 2003 and took her training in Calgary, Wainwright and Edmonton. Hope is still serving. She married Kevin Winfield in 2005 and they reside in Winnipeg. WINFIELD, Kevin PEACETIME Kevin was born in Calgary, Alberta in 1969. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1986 and switched to the Royal Canadian Air Force. His training took place in Calgary, Wainwright, Edmonton and Ottawa.
