253 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca WRIGHT, William James WWI William was born in Thessalon, Ontario in 1883 and served in World War I with the 4th Canadian Machine Gun Battalion in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Canada, France and England from 1916 until 1919. After returning from overseas, he was awarded with the British War Medal and a Victory Medal. He settled in Sault Ste. Marie, ON, then moved to the hamlet of Dinorwic, ON. He married Katherine Sullivan and they had a large family of eight daughters and a son. William was a member of Dryden Legion Branch 63 and passed away in 1956. YACHISON, Mike WWII Mike was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1926 and enlisted in the Army as a signal man. He took all of his training in Kingston, Ontario and was stationed in McDonald, MB as a switchboard operator using Morse code during World War II until his discharge in 1946. He married Joyce Brae in 1955 and they had a son and a daughter. Following Mike’s discharge from the Army he had his own electrical business called Yachison Electric until he retired in 1990. He lives in Winnipeg and is a member of Norwood Legion Branch 43. YASCHUK, Michael WWII Michael was born in Ituna, Saskatchewan in 1922 and enlisted in the Navy in 1942 during World War II. He was aboard the HMS Grou when he was accidently scalded, which resulted in him being hospitalized for three months before being sent home for convalescence leave until he was better. He then went on a container ship taking supplies from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Ireland to the second front. Michael worked for North Star Oil, which later became Shell Canada, and retired as plant superintendent after 34 years. He married Aileen Hanley in 1947 and they had two sons and two daughters. Prior to the war, Michael tried out for the Detroit Red Wings, was cut and played for the Saskatoon Quakers and went over to play semi-pro in England for one year. Michael is a member of the Norwood Legion Branch 43.
