23 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca AUGUST, Paul S. WWII Paul was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the son of Paul and Christina August. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Navy, receiving his initial training there. He served on convoy duty in the Atlantic from 1941 to 1943, and with the North Atlantic Attack Force in 1944-1945. He married Phyllis Parks on May 10, 1947. They had three children: Gerald, David and Arlene. Paul was the manager of the Royal Bank of Canada in Hamiota, MB. He served as manager in Baldur, MB throughout the 1960’s. He also served as President of the Baldur Legion Branch, as well as Secretary-Treasurer and on other committees. AULD, Elmer C. WWII Elmer was born in Port Arthur, Ontario in 1924. He enlisted in the Navy and served as a submarine detector on HMCS Burlington in Leg Triangle Run, Q94 Fairmile, HMCS Giffard in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Londonderry, Ireland. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, Battle of the Atlantic Star, 1939-1945 Star and the War Medal. Elmer worked for Imperial Oil and Manitoba Pool Elevators in Thunder Bay, ON. He won the Manitoba Northwestern Ontario Curling Championship in 1975. He was involved in picking up survivors when HMCS Valley Field was torpedoed in the North Atlantic on May 7, 1944. A lot of men from Manitoba lost their lives. He has been a member of Legion Branches 6 and 5 in Thunder Bay for a total of 73 years. AULD, Harry V. WWI Harry was born in Belfast, Ireland in 1898. He enlisted in the Army and served with Border Bull Moose, 141st Battalion, Rainy River District and was transferred to 44th Battalion Canadian Infantry. He served in France and Belgium during World War I. He was gassed in Ypres, France. He worked for CPR for fifty years in Fort William, Ontario as a Carman. He served in the 4th Field Ambulance Regiment in the Canadian Commands Depot Bugles and Drum Band Unit during World War II. He was a member of Legion Branch 6 for 52 years. Harry passed away in 1970.
