241 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca VOODRE, Vernon E. “Vern” WWII Vernon was born in Killarney, Manitoba on May 30, 1925. His parents owned a farm near Killarney and his father was a World War I veteran. Vernon joined the Royal Canadian Armored Corps (RCAC) in May 1944 when he was nineteen. He was sent to CFB Bordon, Ontario to complete his basic training and then trained as a Wireless Operator and Sherman Tank Driver. Vern remained training in CFB Bordon and was not sent to Europe since the war ended in May 1945 (VE Day – May 8, 1945). He recalled preparing to depart for the USA to train in tropical warfare for operations in the Pacific, but did not depart due to the Japanese surrender (VJ Day – August 14, 1945). He took his release from the Army in 1946 and returned to Killarney. After his release from the RCAC, Vernon went to Winnipeg to work at various jobs until he was hired by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). Vernon worked for the CPR as a car man for 39 years and retired in 1985. He met his present wife, Dorothy May, in Winnipeg and they married in 1965. Vernon is a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion and has been an active member of Henderson Highway Legion Branch 215 with over fifty years of service. WALKER, Alfred Tyndal WWII Alfred was born in 1924 and was a native of Blake Township in Neebing, Ontario. As soon as World War II started, Alfred left his quiet country life and enlisted in the Army. He was posted into the Airborne Battalion and graduated as a paratrooper in 1944. He served in the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion in Germany during World War II. He was twenty years old when he was dangerously wounded in action overseas. He was involved in the Rhine Jump on March 24, 1945 where he parachuted into Germany. He suffered wounds to his hips and abdomen. He was a member of the Kakabeka Falls Legion Branch. Alfred passed away in 2001 and is remembered for his courage and patriotism. WALTERSON, Andres WWII Andres, the son of Johannes and Gudbjorg Walterson of Bru, near Cypress River, was born in February 1911. He joined the RCAF in June 1940 where he served as a Paymaster at St. Thomas, Trenton, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton, Coal Harbour and Vancouver. Andres lived in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
