235 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca TEMPLETON, Alvin WWII Alvin was born in Baldur, the son of Sydney and Margaret Templeton. He enlisted in Calgary, trained at Camrose, Alberta and Camp Borden, Ontario and served overseas in the United Kingdom, Holland and Germany. He received the Good Conduct Medal. He married Audrey Warrener on October 18, 1941 and they raised seven children. Alvin died suddenly on April 10, 1971. THOMSON, Ian C. WWII Ian Thomson was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on December 31, 1922. He wanted to join the Air Force in 1940 but his parents convinced him to wait until he graduated from high school in Elmwood. Ian joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on June 31, 1941 and qualified as a bomber pilot on various aircraft including the Wellington Bomber. He deployed to England and joined Bomber Command No. 427 Lion Squadron in 1943 during World War II. Ian flew 34 operational bombing missions in a Wellington Bomber over enemy territory and completed his last mission over Wanne-Eickel, Germany on February 2, 1945. He remained in the Air Force until December 1946 as a transport pilot and trained to become a pilot instructor. After leaving the Air Force, Ian joined the Winnipeg Fire Department and has been an active member of Henderson Highway Legion Branch 215 for over fifty years. THORLEIFSON, Allan O. Sr. WWII Allan was born on December 7, 1919 at Langruth, Manitoba, the son of Gudni and Lena Thorleifson. He enlisted at Portage la Prairie on April 17, 1941, training there and at Winnipeg, Hamilton and Debert until going overseas on July 29, 1942 with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers where he served in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He came home on the Queen Elizabeth on which he had Christmas Dinner with Henry Einarson and Paul Sigurdson, arriving home on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 1945. He went to Baldur in 1946 where he owned and operated the Sundry Drug and Liquor Vendor until December 31, 1967. He married Thora S. Johannesson on October 12, 1947 and they had five sons: Allan O. Jr. was born in 1950; Ian C., born in 1952; Roderick J., born in 1954; Harvey, born in 1957; and Neil Thor was born in 1959. He was happy to have been a small part of the liberation of Holland – a grateful and wonderful people. They liberated Bergen Op Zoom, Bruges, Eeekloo, Ghent, Goch, Antwerpen and that vicinity. Allan was a member of Baldur Legion Branch 108.
