227 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SPARLING, Clarence Coates WWII Clarence was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba on April 18, 1900. He served with the 1st MMR Portage from 1926-1940 at the rank of Acting Captain. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940, mentioned in dispatches, and discharged with the rank of Wing Commander. He served in the United Kingdom, Europe, Mediterranean and North Africa during World War II. He was the 16th President of Flin Flon Legion Branch 73 in 1951, District Commander 1 North, the 3rd Vice President of Manitoba and North Western Ontario Command in 1953, and was awarded Life Membership in 1954. Later, Clarence became the President of Manitoba and North Western Ontario Command and the 3rd Vice President of Dominion Command. Clarence passed away in 1984. SPEERS, William G. PEACETIME William was born in Dauphin, Manitoba in 1939. He enlisted in the Army and served with the 70th Field Battery in Canada during Peacetime and on Reserve. He has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 20 for 49 years. SPINKS, Lawrence Clifford WWII Lawrence was born in Almonte, Ontario on May 15, 1921. He worked at the Collie Woolen Mill in Appleton for a few years prior to enlisting in the Army in June 1942. He did much of this training at Petawawa, ON before being sent to England in September 1943. Lawrence trained in England as a tank driver mechanic attached to the 6th Anti-tank Regiment, 56th Battery. He and his crew landed with their Sherman M10 tank on Juno Beach on July 6. In one incident, Lawrence and crew escaped their tank shortly before it was destroyed by a German tank. He served in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during World War II. After the war, he arrived home just before Christmas 1945 and was discharged on January 4, 1946. Lawrence joined the Air Force a few years after the war and had a lengthy career.
